“The art of healing comes from nature, not from the physician. Therefore the physician must start from nature, with an open mind.”

Philipus Aureolus Paracelsus

Emotional Health & Well-being with Liz McWatt

Now more than other it is important we focus on our emotional well-being. 2020 threw us all,  and it made many of us question lots of aspects of our lives.

One thing that became evident very quickly with the Covid-19 Pandemic was how vulnerable most people felt. Rushing out to strip the supermarket shelves of food and supplies to hoard at home was a great example of this vulnerability in action.

All of this started me thinking about the qualities of resilience and how can strengthen our ability to respond robustly to the challenges that life offers us.

How do we find strength in all of this and how do we move forward in a meaningful way that protects individuals, communities, and our beautiful planet, mother earth, with the abundance of life it contains.

Honouring and nurturing your-self is vital for emotional well-being.

Learning to manage stress positively is crucial; a little bit of stress is motivating, the problems arise when it gets out of control and we haven’t got the coping strategies to relieve or manage the stress.

You can support your mental health through the diet you eat, the lifestyle you choose, spending time in nature and nurturing yourself.

You might find this leaflet gives you some useful tips

Nutritional Therapy can play an important role in mental health and wellness. Did you know that for example that you need healthy bowel flora to manufacture feel-good chemicals such as Serotonin which boost your mood and feelings of happiness?

Magnesium is a vital nutrient in brain chemistry; it is a co-factor to over 500 enzymes in your body and plays a crucial role in breaking down stress hormones.

We all respond to stress in different ways and some of us are far more resilient than others. The study of Nutrigenetics has enabled me to gain a greater understanding of the reasons why. For example polymorphisms of the COMT enzyme are common: this enzyme is responsible for breaking down stress chemicals (and the female hormone oestrogen). The nutrients Magnesium and vitamin B6 are essential co-factors for this enzyme, so using these nutrients to support someone who is suffering from stress-related symptoms can be incredibly powerful.

Anxiety is a common problem and this can be addressed in different many ways; nutritional strategies can play an important role in addressing anxiety by helping to support the production of the calming neurotransmitters. In my consultations, I recommend a combination of Nutritional Therapy, Homeopathic remedies and flower essences to support individual’s emotional well-being.

Connection to nature heals

Just a walk in the woods or a stroll by the beach on a sunny morning can awaken the innermost feelings of happiness and peace.

Staying close to nature improves our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It makes us feel alive from the inside, and we should not compromise this by spending our lives glued to social media and technology. The Japanese have developed the practice of forest bathing and studies show that people who practice this discipline have optimum nervous system functions, experience cardiovascular benefits, and they experience reduced depression and bowel disorders.

What is mind-body healing?

Mind-body healing draws on the power of thoughts and emotions to affect physical health & well-being. This is not a new concept; it has been part of ancient indigenous healing practices such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine for thousands of years.

Psychoneuroimmunology is a relatively recent field of scientific study which researches the influence of the thoughts and emotions on the functioning of the immune system and the health of the body. Interest in the relationship between emotions and health in modern-day medicine began in the 1960s after a psychiatrist called George Solomon saw that rheumatoid arthritis worsened when people were depressed and this led him to investigate the impact of emotions on inflammation and immune function in general.

We’ve all heard or used expressions like these: “He has a broken heart” or “I knew it in my gut” or “It gets on my nerves.” If you’ve felt butterflies in your stomach when you were anxious or felt love in your heart area, then you’ve experienced the mind and body connection.

The goal of mind-body techniques is to get the body and mind to relax and to reduce the levels of stress hormones in the body so that your immune system is better able to fight off illness. The benefit of learning to work with the mind-body connection is not only in its ability to help you improve your health but to achieve more of what you want in your life and live your life to the full.

There are many ways to work positively on emotional health and well-being to improve your health and vitality. These can include practices such as yoga, meditation, relaxation exercises, ensuring you spend more time with friends and loved ones, taking regular exercise, spending time in nature and taking time to appreciate and enjoy your life.

The use of flower essences is one way to help you to work on promoting positive feelings of well-being and dissolve negative thought patterns and in this way they can act as catalysts for change helping us to regain a renewed sense of health and well-being.

What are Flower Essences?

The Original range of flower essences was developed by GP and Homeopath Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s and there are now many other ranges of essences available. Flower essences are made by infusing flowers or other plant parts in spring water and then adding alcohol as a preservative. These preparations embody the distinct imprint, or energetic pattern of each flower species and the healing properties of flower essences are made possible through the life force of the flowers. The life force of each different species of flower is “in tune” with different emotions.

How to use Flower Essences

Flower essences are very safe to use. Flower essences can be taken directly from the stock bottle. A few drops are typically applied under the tongue. Alternately, three to four drops of stock essences are mixed into a litre of purified water that is sipped throughout the day. Essences can also be applied topically by either putting a few drops in your bath, purchasing creams or sprays made with the essences, such as “Rescue Remedy” of the Bach range of essences.
